Best Poster Prize at AI 2015 for Undergraduate Dissertation Work
If "The Duke of York visited Aberystwyth", would this represent a news story about York or about Aberystwyth? Computer Science graduate Sean Sapstead presented his final year dissertation work on the topic of automatically geotagging news articles at the BCS AI 2015 conference in Cambridge in December 2015, and he won the best poster prize. His dissertation used machine learning and natural language processing to analyse the text of historic newspaper articles digitised in the Welsh Newspapers Online collection of the National Library of Wales. Sean's prize was £100 and a trophy. He currently works as a data analyst and IT expert at the Mirfield Free Grammar School.
